RFID Blocking Sleeves and Wallets

August 2, 2015

You may have noticed recent TV commercials advertising products that prevent sensitive data from hacker attacks. These hackers skim information straight from your credit cards and you’re none the wiser until you get the bill, or receive an alarming call from your credit card company reporting suspicious activity on your account.

The products are called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Blocking Sleeves or Wallets, which shield hackers from obtaining your information. While there doesn’t seem to be any dispute that these products work, there’s an ongoing debate as to whether these products are really necessary.

In the age of the digital pickpocket where credit card fraud is a 150 billion dollar a year industry and the number one crime in the world, taking extra precautions to safeguard your sensitive information is never a bad idea and this is just one option to explore. This breed of thief often targets busy areas like shopping malls or airports where they can obtain hundreds of card information quickly, and where people are likely to have their cards on them.

In the early stages of this technology, it’s entirely up to each individual to assess the need and desire for this type of protection. When making your decision, just remember one thing…no one ever thinks it will happen to them.
